Federal Stafford Loans can be subsidized or unsubsidized.  These are government guaranteed student loans with a fixed interest rate.  The type and amount of loan that you may qualify for will be determined by the college or university that you attend.

PLUS Loans are loans for parents of dependent, undergraduate students.  These loans are government guaranteed with a fixed interest rate.  The maximum loan amount is the cost of attendance minus other financial aid.

Grad PLUS Loans are for graduate and professional degree students. To be eligible for a Grad PLUS Loan, you must: complete the FAFSA; pass a credit check; have applied for the annual loan maximum eligble under the Subsidized and Unsubsidized Federal Stafford Loan program before applying for a Federal Grad PLUS Loan. These are government guaranteed loans with a fixed interest rate.

You must submit the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) and receive an award letter from your college or university before you can apply for the Federal Stafford or Federal Grad PLUS loans.  FAFSA applications can be completed online at www.fafsa.ed.gov.
